CCG, PHB, M&T boxed set!

It has taken a while for this revelation to come to me but having read the introduction to old school roleplaying (and the advent of the C&C boxed set), I've realised that while I like the 3.xE ruleset and the detail it contains I want that as a DM resource to use/not use as required. While I want the player experience to be much more rules independent like the C&C/AD&D/BECMI style of play.

i.e. having advice on how to adjudicate situations from 3.xE is great for a DM resource (but with the proviso that I don't have to follow it) but players shouldn't feel restricted into only attempting things that have specific rules for them.

This significantly lowers the requirements for new players to know the game system.

Ultimately it depends on people's preference. (I can see why some people may want to know the rules and use the rules to their advantage [as a definition of skill at playing the game]). I guess the trick is running the game with like minded people?
