CD: Divine crusader

A few questions for everyone on the divine crusader (from the Complete Divine)

* Can you take one level of the divine crusader and then take levels in some other class that gives +1 divine caster level, thus being able to follow the divine crusader spell progression?

* If you do take some other PrC (say Radiant Servant of Pelor), can you use spells from the bonus domain(s) granted as part of your divine crusader spell list?

Thanks!

By the rules, I don't see a reason why not...

By the RAW, that's a viable interpretation. I'm not even sure it'd end up being broken--not even with Radiant Servant of Pelor.

Well, since the limit of the divine crusaders very fast spell advancement is the lack of flexibility, it seems like being able to select spells from other domains would be a huge power up. Especially as the divine crusader has very little in the way extra powers. It seems that there would be no good reason to continue in divine crusader rather than switching to some other PrC.

True, but consider the prerequisites of the Divine Crusader and the benefits. Divine Crusaders require a +7 BAB and get a number of combat centric abilities like weapon specialization.

So, the earliest you can get 9th level spells is 16th level and even then you need a 28 charisma. So, let's speculate a worst case scenario for power: someone manages to get three domains (perhaps as a Divine Crusader/Radiant Servant/Contemplative of Pelor). As a 16th level character, they have up to 9th level spells spontaneously castable from 3 domains. That's good, but a wizard or cleric could do nearly as much by just preparing the same spell lots and lots of times. And they'd have more flexibility. By 17th level, the wizard or cleric will be better casters than the Divine Crusader (doubly so since they'll have a good caster level). And in order to get the multiple domains, it's likely that the Divine Crusader has nerfed his combat ability.
I would think the best way to take advantage of the Divine Crusader would be to use a 1/1 BAB, nearly 1/1 casting prestige class and be a fighter with more spells than you'd expect. But even there, I can't see it being more than on a par with the Fighter/Cleric/Prestige Paladin/Lion of Talisied (or whatever that BoED p-class is) buids that show up on the WotC character optimization boards.

Now, I haven't looked into monsters much. Divine Crusader probably breaks like a grade-school balsa wood bridge if you start applying it to Erynies blackguards of Hextor, but for PCs, I don't see a problem.

Unless you make said Eryines even more bad ass with better stats, more HD and probably a few extra bonus feats. Maybe even template it a little more.
