[Chain Spell] Dispel Magic

Lasher Dragon said:
So if a creature has multiple ongoing spells, then you get a dispel check for each of them, with 1 creature-targeted dispel magic. Am I wrong?

That's right, but I believe Pyrex was talking about items on the character, which do need to be targeted individually. The neat thing is that a character could chain a Dispel Magic to hit multiple magic items on a single character as well! Excellent use of the chain spell metamagic feat, thanks for sharing Felix!

Where is the rule in the Core books (or FAQ or errata) that says you can not do this? It is obviously a variable, otherwise you wouldn't be rolling anything. I like to play by the Rules As Written...
Under the description of the Maximize spell feat. It's funny where WotC chooses to put their info ;)

This has been asked so often by now...

No, of course you cannot maximize the caster level check.

You can, however, Maximize a Dispel Magic.

"If the object that you target is a magic item, you make a dispel check against the item’s caster level. If you succeed, all the item’s magical properties are suppressed for 1d4 rounds, after which the item recovers on its own."

Variable numeric effect right there ;)

That's exactly what I was trying to say. :) When you target a creature, you get to try and Dispel all active spell effects on the creature. You do not get to try and turn off his sword, shield, armor & cloak unless you specifically individually target them. That's what makes the Chained Dispel so good. Especially when paired with Arcane Sight so you know what to target.

You can also Extend it. (can we please not spend the next 10 pages discussing what happens if you both Maximize and Extend the duration? :p )

No, you can't.

Dispel Magic
Duration: Instantaneous

EXTEND SPELL [METAMAGIC]
Benefit: An extended spell lasts twice as long as normal. A spell with a duration of concentration, instantaneous, or permanent is not affected by this feat. An extended spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level.

The 1d20 roll is not part of the spell effect. It's just what you roll when you make a dispel check. The spell effect is, that you make a dispel check, but the dispel check itself is not the spell effect.

I like the use of the Chained Dispel Magic, or, even better, a Chained Greater Dispel Magic. It would be kind of like a Mord's Disjunction, but without the nasty loss of items after you kill your enemies.

I did that to my players (the Chained Greater Dispelling), though I just targeted each of them and not their items. The cleric did have something like 16 extra possible targets he didn't know what to do with. :)
