Change to Toughness?

Death's Door ...

that is pretty cool .. I assume (read as: ej didn't read very thoroughly) that it was in addition to the +3 hp,

so: +3 hp, deaths door increases by 3 ... take this twice as a wiz/sorc and your hp increase dramatically and you can make it another 6 rounds (to -16) before you really kick the bucket ... hopefully long enough for someone to heal or stabilize you.

+1 HP/lvl and can only be taken once.

This is what I do. Works out well.

I disagree about the "based on level" comment. The feat provides an effective +2 to Con for purposes of determining hit points. Spellcasting Prodigy (+2 Int, Wis, Cha) and Dodge (+1 Dodge ~ +2 Dex) provide specialized bonuses as well.

My version of Alt.Toughness:
Your CON is considered to be 2 points higher for the purpose of determining bonus hit points. If you roll less than 50% of your possible hit die when levelling, you receive 50% of the maximum instead (frex: 5 hp + CON bonus for a fighter with d10 HD).

The reason I say it makes dodge useless is it gives a +1 AC always. Dodge only gives you +1 to one opponent and only when not flatfooted. Dodge also has a prerequiste, Toughness does not.

I beg to differ.
Toughness would be superseded by barkskin and/or Amulet of Natural Armour; dodge bonuses do not go 'obsolete' (as all dodge bonuses stack with each other).
Dodge bonuses are retained against touch attacks (very useful indeed)
Dodge is a prerequisite for all the mobile warfare feats (Mobility, Spring Attack, Shot on the Run, Whirlwind Attack etc.)

Ergo, Dodge would not be rendered useless.
