I understand this is an old sidelined topic, but I am looking for some advice beyond the very surface-level discussion that seems to have filled lots of boards over the years.
This might be a little esoteric if you haven't played Werewolf: The Apocalypse before.
I'm experienced, heavily, in OWOD and NWOD, I've run and played both game systems. My focus here is on Fera, specifically because I had a group of players approach me who were very interested in the fluff and lore of the Ahadi in the old world of darkness, in response to me floating the idea of an NWOD Changing Breeds game.
I'm familiar with the somewhat mellow reception of Changing Breeds, both in how it reflects OWOD's breeds, and in how it interacts imperfectly with NWOD Werewolf.
My goal at the moment is to try and decide on how to blend the desire to run an OWOD Ahadi (African beast courts) fluff game with a lean towards the fluidity of NWOD mechanical crunch. Rather than convert the entire lore of OWOD into the NWOD context, I'm really looking to overlay the mechanical advantages of the new game onto the old, and do away with messes like variable dice difficulty, declare-down resolve-up initiative, and replace the myriad of dice mechanics available in gifts and powers with the straight forward Instant, Contested, Extended types outlined in NWOD.
I feel like I can drag any specific gift over from OWOD to NWOD as needed, what I'm really after are a few very crunchy questions about how I'd be best off handling...
A) Renown, and whether it is more like OWOD's slow tick upward and minimums across categories, or the NWOD's simplified dot structure for renown types.
B) Whether to leave gifts open and level based, or to build all the available gifts into Forsaken-Style Gift Trees as needed.
C) How to handle Breed (Homid/Metis/Lupus and equiv) bonuses in an NWOD reflection.
D) Whether to port Rage/Gnosis from OWOD or rely on Primal Urge/Feral Heart and essence.
Really, what I'm after are some other people's ideas on how best to blend the playability of NWOD mechanics into an OWOD chronicle while not sacrificing the low-level mechanical abilities tied to the changing breeds. I'm really fishing for just about any suggestion at this point.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
