Changing the rules (d20 Modern)

Most of Modern I would leave alone - classes, talent trees, etc.

Things I would want changed/fixed would include:
Burst fire and Autofire rules
Nonlethal damage changed to D&D 3.5 version
Armor as DR
Recoil rules for firearms.

Nice to haves:
Additional talent trees for the base classes.
Resolution mechanics similar to Spycraft's Dramatic Conflicts.
Vehicle/starship construction rules

I think the Wealth system is the most elegant and innovative part of d20 Modern. I would want it to stay in.

It wouldn't bother me too much if the nonlethal damage rules went bye bye though.

I'd love to see a lot more talent trees from third party sources make it in.

I also wouldn't mind if a d20 Modern 2.0 learned some lessons from Grim Tales. But if it becomes Spycraft 2.0, you can keep it. :)

One thing I'd rather be rid of: The Wealth System. It's an incoherent mess whose only advantage is the gadget system -- but that can be preserved in a cash-based wealth system.

One thing I'd keep: Starting Occupations. This substantially expands the ability to create unique characters because you can get the class skills you need for a given profession without having to pick the base class ideally suited to that profession. However, calling them starting occupations is a bit odd, since they actually seem to be more like permanent careers.

I agree with everyone about nonlethal damage. I know why they did it, but I also think they did it wrong.

I'm intrigued to see people saying how much they love the base classes, because as I mentioned above I love the structure but hate the actual classes. To me, they are a lot weaker than D&D classes, which I think ought to be a baseline.

What is it you like about the classes besides the structure and talent trees?

To be honest I don't mind the wealth system, I have enough fun just doing my own finances (thus that is why my wife keeps the bills). I don't want to have to worry about financies for a fictional character. Do I think the system could be streamlined a little, yes. But it was done that way for the reason above.

I have some thoughts to be sure. Right now though, I'm listening and hearing a lot of interesting ideas :)

Are you planning a new project with variant rules? Perhaps D20 modern 2.0???? I'll be the first to start the D20 2nd edition rumors!!!

In all seriousness, there is something about D20 modern that I have trouble putting my finger on. I guess the word would be versatility. While, I do agree with many if the likes/dislikes posted here it seems like a GM can include or exclude almost anything without "breaking" the game. It's not a perfect system, but D20M gets the job done when it comes down to it.

the d20M system works well, but if you try to strap on the future rule sets it starts to become clunky and some parts don't fit together at all.

The urban arcana seems to fit well inot modern system as well, as it is aimed at a lower powered game for psionics and magic.
