Chaos Creatures

DM's Familiar
I'm looking for monsters to populate a chaos plane. There's demons, there's sladdi, but I'm looking for something different. Either a group of monsters from some other monster manual or even a template I can apply to existing creatures. Anybody have suggestions?

IIRC the Book of Templates had some goodies that you could use to make some more twisted creatures. Ditto for the Advanced Bestiary.

Two other sources you might want to look at are Malhavoc Press' 'Chaositech' and Fantasy Flight's "Portals and Planes".

Monte Cook wrote Chaositech, and while the book has its detractors (even among those who are otherwise Cook fans) there are some disturbing "lords of chaos" type monsters called the Galchutt in the monsters section that would seem up your ally.

Mike Mearls wrote Portals and Planes -- and there is a good, though far to brief, portion of the monsters sectiosn of that book describing "lords of chaos" type monsters...the book also presents some innovative rules ideas for adventuring on a chaos-type plane itself.

Planar Handbook (WotC) has the anarchic creature template, which is vaguely chaotic. Planes & Portals (FFG) has a section on chaos lords and another chaotic template for creatures. Dragon #287 had some wild, break-apart-reality creatures in an article called Creatures from the Chaos Spire. A couple of those were reprinted in Dragon Compendium.

Then there's the obvious things like the chaos beast and phasm in the MM.

I know this is coming out of left field, but take a look at the back of the DMG 1E where it allows you to generate "alternate appearance" demons.

I'd use regular ones, but make them appear bizarre and twisted. As for other manuals, the Demons & Devils stuff from Erik Mona has lots of 'monsters'

..and throw in a little "Lankmar" just for flavor..but twist it. Familiar but creepy as hell can give really put players on edge. Can you imagine having an NPC they'd encountered there, having been thrust into the Abyss as part of his death punishment (instead of Heaven) and been mutilated and bearing such a hatred for the PC's for 'offing him'..but he's got a tentacle coming out of his eye now and sloppy slime appendages? Think the movie "The THING."

Just because it's on another plane doesn't mean that you can't have a connection to the material or prior adventures.

Chaotic gibbering mouthers the size of small moons, or large buildings, which float through the air...

I dunno why that concept appeals to me, but this thread made me think of it- so I though I'd post it.

How bout an advanced Chaos Beast? There was a dungeon adventure that I ran (
Chamber of Antiquity from Dungeon 124
that had an advanced one (24 HD I believe) with some unique abilities that were cool. That one was pretty scary for my players; nice Cthulhu feel.

If you are not using the Far Realm as outside the multiverse in game, I find that Half-Farspawn and Non epic Psudonatural templates fill the niche of Chaos as a threat to the very laws of reality.

Thanks, gang. I think the Dragon magazine will fit the bill. A couple asides:

* Monte Cook's Chaositech: This is actually what I'm working on. It has some high CR Galchutts, but no low to middle CR ones. Trying to get some more.

* Dungeon 124 does have the advanced Chaos Beast, too high a CR though. It does have a bunch of Hordlings though which would work. Even better, it has tables for making randomly looking hordlings and varying them. May use those as well.

nothing to see here said:

Hunh. I'm not exactly a Monte fanboy worshipper myself, but I really loved that book. What was so bad about it?
