Character artist recommendations?

I'm looking for a good artist from whom to commission a character portrait. I'd like something on 8.5x11, in color. Light background would be nice, but isn't vital. I'm not picky about the medium, but if on paper or board I would like the original. The hard part is that I'd like to get all this for $100 (or less, if digital or otherwise without the original).

Can anybody recommend a specific artist they're sure takes commissions for this price range? (I've been to several sites featuring many artists, but it's a lot to sort through, so I decided to see if I could find someone in particular people liked.)

Well, first of all, you might have best luck going to the Art forum here on the boards.

However, I need to ask what you're looking for in style. Black and white illustration? Comic style inks and digital coloring? Oil or watercolor painting?

I've got a friend who does illustration work for us at E.N. Publishing, and she's rather nice at people, though not as great if you want a lot of detail and buckles and stuff. But she does great expressions, if you are more concerned about your PCs' personalities than their gear. She would certainly do a black and white illustration for $50, if all you want is the character. A full scene would of course go for more.

Too bad you didn't make this post about a year ago; Kai Lord set up a contest a while back where the winner would get their character drawn by Todd Lockwood.
