Character assistance for a demonic infestation campaign

javcs

First Post
The campaign is very low magic items, we're using this non-magical variant for enhanced gear.
Weapon groups, Armor as DR, Class Defense Bonus, Action Points, and Reserve Points are the other variants being used.

Level 5, gestalt, 9,000 gp, possibly all the gear we're ever going to get.
32 point buy.

The world's been infested with demons, so demonic foes will likely be our most common opponents.

Class selection rules:
Two classes off the "Passive" list or one class off the "Active" list and one class off the "Passive" list.

"Active":
Beguiler
Dragons Shaman
DuskBlade
Bard
Cleric
Druid
Favored Soul
Sorcerer
Warlock
Warmage
Wizard
Blade Scholar
Dread Necromancer
Archivist
Warblade
Crusader
Swordsage
Psion
Wilder
PsyWarrior

"Passive":
Knight
Barbarian
Fighter
Hexblade
Marshal
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue
SoulKnife

I'm thinking about a Human Favored Soul // Ranger (Combat Style variant).
Str 10, Con 12, Dex 14, Int 12,Wis 15, Cha 15 (4th level boost added to Wis/Cha)

I'm looking for suggestions on feat choices, spell choices, and useful mundane items.

Everything Core and XPH is approved, except for blatantly broken things.
Most things from these books should be okay: Complete Warrior, scoundrel, adventure, champion, Heroes of Horror, Heroes of battle, the races books and players handbook 2
Everything else is approved on a case-by-case basis, and probably will be approved if it's reasonable and fits.

Thanks for your help!

I recommend purify spell (and typically cleric with the Good domain). There's nothing like a purified flame strike, or even better, a purified blade barrier in the midst of a bunch of demons and good-aligned PCs.

No scout? Too bad, a Swift Hunter Scout/ranger plus bard or cleric as second class would rock.

Actually, I'd pick a Warblade/Soulknife combination heading for the Soulbow and Bloodstorm blade prestige classes for ranged combat.

You probably know this, but remember you can't take a level in two prestige classes at the same time.

Yes, but that class combo still awfully nice even though you can't reach level 10 in both prestige classes.

Doing Favored Soul/ Spell-less Paladin would be nice, too: Nice saving throws, All weapons are Good-aligned (enough to beat most of the low to mid level Demon DR).

I guess you're looking at an archer with those ability scores. If you are, I'd be tempted to sink most of that money into a +1 seeking longbow - you need a magic weapon, negating most miss chances is really useful, and you can't afford a holy enchantment. Using those enhanced gear rules you'd make it out of yew.

If you've got the warblade & swordsage available, you should have the feats from the Bo9S too, which means you should get the Shadow Blade feat in addition to Weapon Finesse - actually, this'd make the two-weapon ranger fighting style viable for you. Which is it?

Really? I must have always missed this rule - could you point me towards it please?

A gestalt character can’t combine two prestige classes at any level, although it’s okay to combine a prestige class and a regular class. Prestige classes that are essentially class combinations-such as the arcane trickster, mystic theurge, and eldritch knight-should be prohibited if you’re using gestalt classes, because they unduly complicate the game balance of what’s already a high-powered variant. Because it’s possible for gestalt characters to qualify for prestige classes earlier than normal, the game master is entirely justified in toughening the prerequisites of a prestige class so it’s available only after 5th level, even for gestalt characters.

It's under the Class Features in Building a Gestalt Character.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.
The spell suggestions, I passed some along to the Archivist//Rogue.
At any rate, I wound up utilizing a homebrew class that is somewhat like a warlock that has a chance of going temporarily insane (actually being taken over by a CE creature) whenever he uses one of his powers // ranger (archery).

If you're interested in seeing the sheet, it's here.
The Harrowed (the homebrew class I used) is here.

If you want to play an archer: Bard/Marshal. You're the buff machine and all you need for a lot of damage is a Bow of Songs (MIC version, not Comp Scoundrel), boots of speed, good Cha, PBS, Rapid Shot, str 14, dex 14 and some ideas how to get Song of the White Raven.
