Just to add to the Windows 7 only data point, I just completed the update without issues. So what is happening is specific to Windows 7 on a vm or to a vm on a Mac

Yeah, that's why I was asking as I suspected it might have something to do with the Apple drivers. Even running it 'natively' there are still minor BIOS issues that come up every now and then 'cause of Apple's proprietary drivers. At least that's how I understand it.
