Character discussion

I started this discussion to see what creature types people are using as characters. I myself am currently using a Half-Dragon of the color Red.

I have been wanting to play a half-celestial for a while now. they sound pretty interesting especially with the appropriate backstory. however, in order for the LA to be ignored. they have to be in a party with similar +4 templates. argg.

Let's ssee... in my entire gaming career, which spans from far before D20 existed... to current? It'd be a long list, but the ones I can think of offhand are:

I tend to play demon-heritage characters the most often. (Tieflings/half-fiends, etc.) I've also played a centaur, a human who was becoming a nymph, a half-janni, a succubus (back to the demon thing again ;)), an elf who became a shadow-walker (from WOTC's Unapproachable East, a creature who undergoes a ritual that infuses them with the essence of shadow), a human who became a soul-mech (from FFG's Dragonstar setting, they are sort of like an android), a red dragon hatchling, and an intelligent war-horse. Funny enough, from the PBP races I have only played an elf once, a half-elf a handful of times, a human many times, and never a dwarf, half-orc, or halfling.

One of the nicest things about 3E is that anything can be a character race, as long as you are willing to handle the ECL. And even then, with optional rules from Monte Cook, among others, that needn't even be a problem for long. :)

the only thing i could think of to make a half-celestial even nearly playable is introduce the character without wings, dropping it to ECL +2 and slowly over the course of her gaming career have her evolve into a fully functional half-celestial. maybe by dropping a feat here or there.... who knows.

Currently playing: Penirach, wyrmling Copper dragon, 9 days old.

I've discovered however that I'm at a major disadvantage when compared to the rest of the party. The orc barbarian and half-celestial paladin are combat powerhouses, the gnomish wizard has 4th level spells, the two rogues are more than effective in combat and skill-wise, and both have excellent UMD for wands of curing...

And what can I do? I can breath 2d4 acid damage, or bite for 1d4+1. I can't even use my 1d3 claws unless I move into my opponents square.

It's a fun character to play, and I'm enjoying crafting the personality, but he's mechanically inferior to just about everyone.

Currently running an orc barbarian with Int, Wis and Cha 6 each (Wis 3 now since we met an allip). Sometimes it's fun to play the cliche.
