Let me see if I have this straight.

Let's take Frank the fifteenth level fighter (human) and Sally the seventeenth level sorceror (also human) and compare them to Walter the weird. Walter is not human. Walter belongs to a race that has 5 HD and a +2 level adjustment in the monster manual. Walter also has 10 levels of wizard.

Now let's say that Walter is introduced into the campaign at 10th wizard level as a character.

1) Does his starting equipment get calculated to match that of Frank or that of Sally?

2) Does his starting experience point total match Frank or Sally?

3) When calculating his experience points at the conclusion of his first adventure with Frank and Sally, is he treated like Frank or Sally?

4) To get 11th level as a wizard, does he need as many experience points as Frank does to gain 16th level, or as many experience points as Sally does to gain 18th level?

Sally.

Sally.

Use total ECL (racial HD + class HD + level adjustment) for XP & starting equipment. Use total HD (racial HD + class HD) for everything else.

I want to make sure I get this too, so here's my understanding:

Walter is a 10th level wizard.
Walter has 5 Hit Dice worth of a race.

Thus Walter is Character Level 15 (aka 15 Hit Dice).

Based on this number, he should have 6 feats (one each at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 Hit Dice). He should have +2 worth of stat advancement (one each at 8 and 12 Hit Dice. He doesn't get one at 4 HD because that was already included in his racial stat adjustments. If Walter's base Race was 3 HD instead, he would have gotten another stat advancement).

Walter's Race also has a +2 Level Adjustment, so Walter has an ECL of 17.

Walter should have starting wealth based on his ECL.

Walter's starting XP is based on his ECL.

Walter's XP for each encounter is calculated on his ECL.

Walter's Xp for his next level is also calculated based on his ECL.

So, for all of your questions, Walter is treated like Sally, not like Frank.
