Man in the Funny Hat
Hero
I created a halfling rogue for a 2E campaign. I wanted him to be nobility but only very marginally so, yet he would need a long formal name (which I never planned to really use) in order to define his lineage. So I named him Baron Fyzo Jet Danoran Szpatch Treenofferbodiddity - Baron Fyzo. The player running a paladin in the group immediately began teasing him and started calling him The Duke. Still trying to stay in character and not wanting to make dangerous claims to far more important titles he did not hold I had Fyzo attempt to insist, "I am not a DUKE ,I'm only a baron." So Duke immediately became not baron, but - Duck.
Knowiing then that I'd never get this particular PLAYER to let go of it I just rolled with it instead. He went the rest of the campaign generally being referred to as The Duck but I OWNED that name and it ultimately came to be spoken with respect for the characters often reckless bravery. In particular there was an incident early on in the campaign when The Duck and that same paladin PC wound up trapped together and fighting to the death against a swarm of deadly spiders.
