I found this method about 6 months or so on the boards (KenjiB was the originator) and we've pretty much universally adopted it going forward. I don't think the originator called it the Organic 28 point buy, but it's what we started calling it soon after we implemented it.
It works like this.
Organic 28 point buy
a) Roll 3d6 for each stat in order.
b) Flip-flop any two stats.
c) Figure out how many points the 6 3d6 stats would be worth under the point buy system.
d) Give the player the difference between the 28-point buy(note this could be any #, we just like 28 pts) and their current point total. If this number is less than 4 give the character 4 pts.
e) Character spends the extra points as they choose under normal stat buys rules using the 3d6 stats as the starting point.
f) Apply racial factors
