Characters with the same name? In the same party?

Not exactly the same - but in a 2 player (& a DM) game, me & the other player met each other for the first time and introduced ourselves - Wolfgang and Wolfgar! Wolfgar declared them pack brothers!

Not intentional - we hadn't known what the other was bringing or what the names had been. Even the DM was surprised.

In the first AD&D game I ever played, everyone named their characters Joe. Worse their last names were based on ther class. There was Joe Fighter, Joe Wizard, Joe Thief. They needed a cleric. Joe Cleric, had already been taken, but he met an untimely death at the hands of some vile mob. So I incremented the letter by 1 and came up with a religious sounding word that started with D. So Joe Dominie was used.

We once named all of our characters "Fay" (we were almost all male...)
I was a wizard named Fay Alud
There was an elf archer named Fay Vel
there were other two (a minotaur and a werewolf) that I don't recall the name.
We all took the same birthdates too... (we usually play with calendars)
It was funny...

Tristan and Isolde were a couple from a myth related to the King Arthur stories. Tristan is supposed to be escorting Isolde to go marry some lord or king, and they accidentally are affected by a love potion and fall in love. Since they can't bear to be apart and don't want to have to deal with the lord, they hide in the wilderness. It's a very tragic story, since they never were supposed to be lovers.

I'm sure that led to some interesting moments in the game. It's too nifty an idea to pass up.

About seven years ago I was invited to join some friends for a LARP session of Werewolf the Apocalypse. When I showed up, someone in character asks me my name and I introduced myself as Howls-with-passion. The person I was talking to just laughed at said something like "No thanks. We've already got one." I was then lead over to meet the pack leader, played by a lovely young woman, likewise known as Howls-with-passion. We've been together ever since. :D

Can anyone top that?

Funny you should ask...imagine my surprise when the elf rogue in our party introduced himself with the same last name as me, Fallenstar. We were also from the same city, but were in no way related. Since this was before the campaign had officially started, I changed my name to Qualen Nightwhisper.

It's an evil campaign so we get nifty evil-sounding last names :)

I once played in a game where 3 of the players were named Matt. That really did get confusing. Thanks heavens it was only a one-shot. I think they got really tired of us pointing and saying, "Hey you! That's right, the one on the left."

I played in a game once where three of us brought new characters to the table, each with the name of Durgus McFallingstar. One was a dwarven druid, the second was a orcish kitten juggler, and the third was a Republican. It was very, very eerie after the first guy introduced his character and the other two of us said simultaneously, "Hey, that's MY name!" You could have cut the silence with a cheese grater. The DM sidestepped the confusion, though, by auctioning off the name to the highest bidder. He made $38 from the deal. Sadly, Durgus McFallingstar succumbed to a gellatinous green dragon ("Hey! It's lime Jell-O in the shape of a gecko!") before he ever reached third level.

In our last game my character was named Annelise, and on my character sheet, I had noted "Lise" as a nickname. So, it was Annelise "Lise" Vogel. Another player in the party (a woman), had a character named Lyssa.

So, it was kind of funny that we had Lise and Lyssa. Not the same, but close. We just remedied it by calling my character Annelise. So, it wasn't a big deal.

The really funny thing about it was that we had the same miniatures for our characters!

Well, she had two - one for sword mode, and one for bow mode. I had the same "bow mode" fig as she did. Later on, I changed to a different mini - a bard fig, and then later changed to a sorcerer mini since I changed her from a bard to a sorcerer.

You all wanted to hear all that crap, didn't you? :\

Playing in a campaign with a Scottish feel, we all went looking for Scottish/Irish names. I eventually settled on Fiona. After a few months we had some guest players. As we were all introducing our characters, one of the guests announced that his character was named Fiona. I just laughed, but he insisted on changing it, saying he had looked for hours for a name. So he ended up being Heather instead.
