Can you choose the charge attack option with the fly by attack feat?

Does the straight line restriction mean you can't change altitude?

1. It depends on your answer to whether you can use Spring Attack with Charge. Of course, the issue of AoO reamins as you Do draw an AoO with a fly-by attack.

2. Of course youy can change altitude - but only in a straight line (think 3-dimensionally).

When you charge you have to stop your movement and attack as soon as you threaten the enemy.

True. But if you are in the camp that says that Spring Attack trumps that rule, then Fly-By Attack would also trump that rule.

There is a good rules-based argument that supports both sides. I don't think this is addressed in the FAQ.

Hey, here's a minor question related to charge...

I recently purchased a battlemat in our group, and previously we never gridded combat.

So, I've run into the situation where now I have players that charge... but they don't have a straight line to the target via the grid. There's nothing in between them and the foe - they have a straight line of SIGHT....

I've been letting them charge anyways, even when on the grid - they don't have a straight box-by-box line to the target.

I'm assuming I'm playing it the way its meant to be done... just thought I'd get some further input.

Yes :) The characters aren't chess pieces, after all - they do have some free will :)

If you think about it, your grid is arbitrary - you could take the same map, rotate it 35 degrees, lay the grid over it again, and suddenly there would be a straight grid-line connecting the character and his target.

One of the common tricks is to use a piece of string to measure the distance, and see whether it's within his movement allocation.

I ran into a situation last night where I had the party going up against a Gigantic Centipede... it has a facing of 15'x60'. Representing that on the grid map was amusing to say the least... I was thankful I didn't have to figure out how to move it around the map - the party quickly surrounded it before its initiative, so it never had to go anywhere. ;)
