Charity Fundraiser - our own setting search!

Given that I joined ENWorld to gather intelligence on the setting search in the first place, I naturally support this in whatever form it comes.

The only question - do I leave my loser submission the same or do I tweak to improve my chances??:( Decisions! Decisions!

I second the idea of selling the ones that don't make it as well. If WotC's x:10:3:1 example is followed that would mean 7 10-pagers and 2 100-pagers, and I'm sure people would be interested in them. Naturally the money would still go to charity, and there would have to be a certain percentage divided among the authors in some way.

Oh, this is cool... I'm all for it. Hopefully, Morrus can get WotC to donate their 2nd and 3rd round submission formats.

I'm also curious as to what compatibility level we should shoot for ultimately? d20? OGL? (Obviously it doesn't matter for the 1st round.)

Also, maybe we could even have two winners - a print version (put out by Nat20), and a fully Net-based Open Gaming Community setting (a la Daemonforge).

This is a great idea!

I'm all for it. I just hope I haven't screwed myself by posting my entries in the winners/losers thread.

What do I need to do to enter?

Instead of open voting, what about ranking? Everyone can rank a setting proposal once, on a scale of 1 - 10. Take those that score 10 (or 9-10, whatever gives you a good range), and do it again. Repeat as necessary. People won't only vote for their own, and everyone gets a say.

That said, I could go for a book of 10 page settings, as well as one big setting. Just make sure they all have maps...

I'm at work with a five minute break between meetings, but I had this idea so I had to post it.

How about we make our "one pagers" by word limit rather than page limit. The "one page" limit caused a huge amount of confusion in the original stages. A word limit would put everyone on the exact same footing.

My recommendation is for somewhere between 500 and 1000 words

I think everyone will be much better off with judges with some background in the industry.

I don't know if explicit "background in the industry" is really necessary. I mean, were all the ENnies judges people with such "background"?

I have a "crappy" background in the industry, does that count? :)

I'll throw my opinion hat into the ring...

I would say that voting directly on any setting propasal should not be done directly, but instead should be done in a representative fashion. That, of course, means that the community should pick the actual submission judges by popular vote. The mechanic for picking the ENnies judges seemed to be a pretty good one. I also think that any judging should be about as blind as possible (which would mean closing and burying the thread where people are posting submissions).

Qualifications for the judges should include membership as an active member of the boards, and the judges should not be allowed to also enter the contest/search (that one is a no brainer).

Also, and this one would be directly for Morrus, I strongly suggest you make the restriction for entering this contest be that you are a full and contributing member of the community - and by that I mean paid membership. Not only will this thin the amount of submissions, but it will create an influx of money that can be used for administering the contest, as many (and I would include myself in this number) become paid members of the community.

Lastly, I hope you realize the immense amount of work that will end up being done by those who actually judge such a contest. If you decide to actually do this, you can pretty much count on saying goodbye to any kind of life!

And, once again, congratulations to those who made the first cut in the WotC search!
