Charm Person on a PC: How do you handle it?

How have you handled things (either as a player or a DM) when an NPC casts a charm person on you? Have you or your player played along?

Same here. A note or take them aside for just a minute and help them establish their "motivation."

One of my players (Dave, known around here as Lucius Foxhound) is particularly good at this sort of thing.

My players also run with it. In fact, I had one player play (quite well) his character while it was possessed/dominated by a demon for about four months of game time. WHen the other players finaly found out, they were horified at what their charactes had been manipulated into doing by this demon. Great fun :D

I just tell them that they're charmed. Most players enjoy playing it out. For charm person I just say something like, "You realize that the dryad is actually your best friend. How could that have slipped your mind before? This doesn't mean you aren't friends with the other PC's, but you like the dryad even more." or something like that.

I had my fighter dominated by a vampire at GenConUK. It was the last day of the Con, so everyone was a bit sleep deprived. I killed the other member of the party in the room with me (a halfling) and then made my way back to the rest of the group.

In the first round back, the vampire Dominated the Barbarian, and told me to attack everyone. I asked the DM if I knew the Barbarian was under control too, and he said no. So I attacked him, because I thought he was the biggest threat to me.

The vampire got a bit cross, mostly when the Barbarian attacked me back. So then he told us to stop, and then attack everyone else, whilst dominating the Cleric. I couldn't believe the DM had made the same mistake twice, so I attacked the Cleric, because the two thieves were hiding!

Eventually the DM Vampire sorted us out, we slaughtered one thief but the other was running away into a dark area. The vampire shouts "Find him!"

So the Cleric casts Daylight on his dagger, in order to be able to see the Rogue better...

At this point the Vampire gave up on us as hopelessly useless, and assumed gaseous form and left, leaving most of the group in hysterics.

As soon as you were told to attack your party members (actually, each time), you should have gotten another saving throw.

But, sleep deprivation and all...

I just tell the player that his PC now has a new friend, but that he has no compulsion or new goal.

Matter of fact, my own pC is currently charmed by another PC - makes forming trust in an ad-hoc party much easier short-term (loong-term is another thing...)

heh, in 2nd ed, had a player get dominated by a vampire...he was the main fighter. He turned straight toward the wizard and said, "Called shot on the Staff of Power"...

That was a great moment, never seen a wizard run so fast.
