Cheliax and hell

Love the setting, it caters for everything. I have a problem with the 'hell' business in Cheliax though.

There's a couple of Christians who play with us, and I think it may offend them a bit.

Although the place is called hell, I assume it is not the Biblical Chrisian hell. That's not so bad, but how closely does Golarion's hell mirror the Christian hell? Could I get by with calling the place the 'Void' and have 'Voidknights'? Are we talking eternal torment here, how is Golarion's hell depicted?

In short, I have no problem with demons and devils, they've been around in d&d for years. But calling the place 'hell', and the hell references might be sailing a bit too close to edge so to speak.

I'd say Dante and Milton were the primary inspirations, with a bit of Goetia. There isn't 'The Christian Hell', so it's kind of hard to say if it resembles something they believe in.

Pathfinder wiki is your friend! Hell - PathfinderWiki

"The plane of Hell is the ultimate expression of evil order in the Great Beyond, of the weak subjugated to serve the strong, of complete obedience, and unquestioning faith. It is not willful and random like the torments of the Abyss, or purely sadistic and spiteful like that of Abaddon. Evil and obedience here are honed to a razor's edge in service to a greater purpose: that of bending the will of souls, and the very architecture of creation itself to the greater glory of the lord Asmodeus and his perfect order. It is the home of a myriad of devils and other evil outsiders, and sadly the final destination for countless mortal souls."

But, I wonder, how important is this, really? I mean, are you planning on setting a campaign primarily in Cheliax? Because if not, the players never need to know...

...but of COURSE you can just change the name to "void." You can change anything. Especially if you're not running a published adventure set in Cheliax, you can remake the entire kingdom from the ground up if you want.

But I'm a little confused... are you saying that these Christian players would be fine with a "fake" hell but not with pretending to smash evil faces in what they think is a "real" hell? Such that, if Golarion's hell is different enough from the Christian hell, the players will have no problems?

Just that they'd be put out if hell was in the setting.

It's easily resolved though, as has been pointed out, it's a simple matter to call Hellmouth, Freeport and go from there.

Yeah, I think it would depend on the particular players. I've certainly played with numerous Christians over the years, and none have been particularly upset by references to Hell, etc.

Generally, I've found that if they want to roleplay in a fantasy world, they're able to separate it from their actual belief systems.

There's a poster map with the core setting book.

What type of maps are these: Map

Are they more detailed or just blown up?

That's a good question - I'd also like to know. I have the setting book, so if I had to guess I would say that this is just a bigger map, but is not more detailed.

While the folio map may possibly be a "blown up" version of the world guide map, there is definitely a lot more detailed information with many more towns, sites, islands and the like named. I'm pretty pleased with the map folio. My only issue is that it's too darn big to fit on my walls when the 4 pieces are put together.
