Perhaps don't tell them that the person involved is santa, or that it's neccisaraly christmans. Simply explain that legend has it that there is a man, dressed in...blood red?...that routinely breaks into homes. He steals small things that seem almostly meaningless...cookies, and leaves either a small peace offering in reperations for his theivery, or small coals from their fireplace in their socks as acts of war. Of course, spread the information out as best you can, and do as much as you can to make him seem like the bad guy. Then have the party set a trap for him, or hunt him down, to prevent this horrid annual theivery and mindless intrusion of privacy. It what I do every year. So far, the big guy has eluded my capture, but I've got a good feeling about this year.
