Church of Hextor, any material?

First Post
Hello all. Finally after months of lurking necesity has forced me to register.

Ive just started a campaign in which the players will be members of the church of Hextor and will carrying out the instructions of the high priest.

So far information in Defenders of the Faith has been useful for getting an overall idea of how the church operates. However im looking for a lot more details in respect to how the church works on the inside. Namely ranks, traditions, methods, policies etc. Anything at all on the church of Hextor would come in handy.

Im quite capable of coming up with my own material but I would like to see what others have done to get some ideas. Any info would be helpful. Also are there any books that go into detail on churches and organised religion?

Thanks

I did a quick search on Yahoo and had 300+ hits on 'church of Hextor', did not really see anything that was helpful but you may want to check some out.

Cheers wighair, this is just the sort of thing im looking for. Do you know if this was made up or is official material?

The reason I ask is that ive been reading a lot of controversial material about Hextor. One hand he is the good of treachery and deciet and all that, but on the other hand he prefers battle to subterfuge.

Also there is much talk of sacrafices and frequent massacres. How does this fit into the lawful evil alignment. Sure they are evil but massacres in particular seems a bit to visible.

Your thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks

Hello papa laz!

It's not "canon" but it is a good read. I'll see if I can help you some. The easiest way to look at Hextor is to imagine what Heironeous would do and then do the oppposite:p Hextor is the main deity worshipped in the Great Kingdom by the nobility. Hextor's dogma is might makes right. However you hold onto your power is the way of the world. This may be by tricking or some other "dubious" method but the one who loses finds out before he dies that Hextor caused their downfall. Just like a Paladin will let the bad guy know who took him down same with a Hextorite:D The Sacrifices and massacres are to instill fear into your subjects. The worst kind of loss of power is from a motley rabble of peasants. So you make sure your Orcish bodyguard has plenty to do what will slaughtering villages and arresting Ringleaders to show the others the true power of the area. I hope some of this made sense, and I'd be more than willing to give you more if you ask!

I came accross the same problem several years ago in AD&D. That link material draws some of it origins from the original Greyhawk boxed set. I had to improvise a bit, but I was using them as recurring enemies. Keep in mind the LE mindset. They are the Dominators and Empire builders. They prefer to conquest and control whenever possible. The Great Kingdom likes Hextor because he's their model. He's also intelligent, educated, charming, and ruthless like a Julius Caesar or modern day politician or business executive.

Bane, Ares, or that LE god in Scarred Lands (forgot the name) are kinda similiar, too.

Their monks would be pretty interesting and maybe have some sneak attack...

Thank you both for your comments. They have helped to clear it up a bit.

The codex of Hextor has given me some interesting ideas but it hasent quite delved deep enough for my likings. When im finished writing up all my material I will post it for your enjoyment.

Sorry about the lack of updates. I actually have exams coming up over the next month or so, and I will be studying fulltime. But come November 19th im free!!!
