grants a +2 competence bonus to the wearer’s charisma’s checks and charisma-based skill checks.
Assuming it's not just a major editing error I get the skill check part just fine but what do they mean about the charisma's check? Do they mean that I get a +2 ability bonus for calculating class ability based off of charisma but that I do not get a real charisma bonus?

class ability example: paladin divine grace.

Yes. This means, you get a +2 to bonus to check, but not an effective +4 bonus to your charisma score (which could also give you a +2 bonus to these checks), thus you gain no more spells per day (Sorceror & Bard) or heaable hitpoints per day (Lay on Hands) or better saving throws (Even though Paladins may add their charismabonus to their saving throws, the throws are still based on the normal ability score - dex, con, wis).
If it would a real bonus to your charisma score, it would cost more (at least the cost of a +4 charisma bonus item like the cloak of charisma +4)

MerakSpielman, I think your right. :) So it would take my charisma up 2 scores for figuring out rather or not I get a bonus to my charisma-based skill check.) How do you treat the divine grave paladin class ability? Does it affect it to?

Mustrum_Ridcully, I'm really not sure what your tring to tell me their.. Sounds like your saying it does nothing extra.

It wouldn't affect something like Divine Grace, which is not a check (you aren't rolling a d20 on it, so it's automatically not affected).

It would affect Undead Turning though, which is a CHA based check, a raw Charisma check or any CHA based skill checks, and any others of that type.

yep*.

Its good for interaction with people. not too much else. Thats the intent of the item. I would also let it add to the leadership score if the wearer had the feat. BTW smite evil is an attack roll not a check in case you were starting to get ideas. ;)

no help on
Spells
Divine grace
Lay on hands
smite evil

[*I personally would not fault a dm if he said it didn't help with turning for his game, since persuading the positive enery planes for more energy is pushing it]

What's so hard to understand there?

+2 to Charisma checks, not Charisma!

That's everytime you take a d20, roll, and add your Charisma modifier (which frankly doesn't happen often, since usually this is covered with skill checks).

It would help with Turning Undead, as this is a Charisma check.

Good that's all I need it for. :)

Where did someone in this post say it raised someone's raw Charisma score...? Thanks for the help anyways...

You're right, you only asked for Cha-based abilities, not the actual score! :)

But that's not applicable for the same reason (they are no checks).
