Civility

Yeah, but I'd prefer e strive for perfection. I think it's achievable for the large majority in terms of civility on these boards.

Absolutely. It's just for me, part of perfection is, "You know, X and I can't talk about this in a civil manner right now for some reason." Could be me, could be X, could be both of us. So I'll not try. But I'm not going to let that stop me from talking to X about something else or some other time. No grudges. There's enough accidental incivility without adding any extra.

BTW, I've never once put a person on my ignore list because they were incivil. It's one of the reasons it isn't very long. I have put people on my list because if I kept reading what they wrote, there was a good chance that I was going to be incivil.

Knowing your limits is definitely a large part of remaining civil. Taking a breather now and again might be necessary to remain civil. Good point (can't XP).

Yeah, I've gotten two more attendees on my ignore list and it is really chopping up the threads because both of the write A LOT (tm)

Seriously, everyone, this is a game and it is not even pre-release yet. The BETA is still firmly behind closed doors. No need to get this excited. You are not a squeaky wheel and WOTC is not gonna grease you.

Hmm.

What about Scotch? Could I get them to "Scotch" me??

I might like that.

I'm kinda torn. On one hand I believe one should be civil because harmony is important, and on the other that somebody should be able to endure any insult to themselves or their game of choice with indifference. A lot of interesting ideas and concepts spring forth from creative opposition, right?

If someone is acting like a troll or a jerk, the last thing I want to do is find some common creative ground.

At this point I'm hoping that when the beta documents are finally released to the public, more than a few implacable blowhards just throw up their hands and storm off in a huff---leaving more reasonable and open-minded folks to help influence the game.

I left EnWorld for around 18 months last time because I could not deal with the nastiness.

Gaming is a hobby and one of my chosen forms of entertainment I enjoy discussing it with other people even if we don't agree on the same things. But when it turns nasty that takes what is supposed to be something I do for fun and turns into something that I don't want to bother with.

One of the things I think people forget that when it comes to taste on how to play the game there are no right or wrong opinions. Tastes are not facts they are opinions. People often throw things around like they are facts and then get angry and condescending when you don't agree.

Saying that 4E is not DnD and is in fact a video game is an opinion not a fact. The same with the spellcasting in 3E makes every other class just support characters is an opinion not a fact. Or saying 1E was unplayable.

Also if someone says this is something they don't like about a certain edition arguing with them that they are wrong is not productive.
