Well, Kingdom Come had some different circumstances. Captain M, enjoying the eternal youth of the gods, was easily a match for the age-ridden Superman in fisticuffs. Supes started to resort to heat vision, which Cap countered by trying to use his lightning as a weapon--which is what he does in this episode as well, with similarly poor results.
Actually, I think the suggestion in
Kingdom Come was that Superman had grown
more powerful over the years (afterall, he was
immune to kryptonite), so it's probable that he was much stronger as well. However, Captain Marvel was able to take him so long as he was effectively nuts and not holding back. I suppose one could argue that Superman was himself holding back since he clearly didn't want to hurt Marvel throughout that fight... Not to mention he spent a lot of time reasoning with him.
As I'm writing this, I'm realizing that I'm agreeing with you.
Anyway, as far as
Kingdom Come goes (IMO, the best superhero graphic novel ever), I'll
never forget the chills I got with the last pages (and particularly the last page) of book three. The last time I got chills like that was with the "card scene" in
Batman Begins. That was some good stuff in
Kingdom Come. It's a shame that Ross didn't have the opportunity to move forward with his ideas for
The Kingdom (instead of the crap we got).
