The ranger is more of a fighter/rogue/cleric, really. Some of the class' most important class skills (hide, move silently, listen, spot) would otherwise be unavailable. What do you mean by more balanced? More powerful? You can hurt yourself with a single-class character as well, if you make poor feat, skill, or spell choices.There needs to be a way to make multi-classing more ballenced with flat 1-20 characters. You can really hurt yourself with multi-classing to get your character concept.
