Classic 3.0 (OoC thread: Discussion Thread: etc.)

Veitus looks good, except that his flatfooted AC should be 13, not ten. His history is fine, thank you. Go ahead and place him in the Rogue's gallery. Once the paladin leaves the Mayer's office, I'll introduce you. SHould be in the next day or two.

After they recieve their training and are considered adult, it is a tradition among elvish nobles to send their children out in the world with the bare minimum to survive so they can develope their own particular mettle.

Aenilaen's parents are no exception to this rule. They do expect her to visit as often as possible and send many letters in the meantime.

I'm not the DM, but Kirinke, there are several large problems with the character.

First, how'd you get Permanent comprehend languages, 2 Masterwork Kitanas, Light Warhorse, and Masterwork composite longbow 150 GP? That's 2400 GP worth of equipment right there, not counting armour, food, or other supplies.

Secondly, your stats... 18, 18, 15, 15, 10, 15 is a LOT more than 32 points.. it's *does math* 58 points.

Third, Kitanas are Exotic weapons from the DMG, you're not even proficient with them.

Fourth, I think you have too many skill points.. You've got 37 listed..

Fifth, you don't have a full equipment list.

Mirthreander, I'm going to edit a bio/background into my char tommorow, and I'll try to do a post up for him tonight. No big surprises, he's a wandering warrior who spent time training in the art of the bo-staff with monks. (I originally was going to make him a fighter/monk, but.. we'll see.

I'm sorry Kirinke, but I only needed 2 players, and they have already been approved. I looked at your character, and it looks like it would be a lot of fun (even though it does not match the character creation criteria that I had stipulated), so perhaps you can find another game to play her in.

Sorry again.

Jemal, thanks! I look forward to your post.

okies. thanks for looking. *scritches head

okies. thanks for looking. *scritches head.
i used a character generator to help me out. I must've mis-calculated my skill points.
as to the others, i can shift the katanas to long-short swords.
the food, warhorse and weapons were gifts from her parents, which are the equiv of elven nobles (hay, they didn't want her to go out completely unprepared). the comp languages were a birthing gift from her sorcerous grandparents. i read in the 2nd edition elven-handbook that such gifts were fair common. And i kinda got the skill-point system screwed up in my head.

like i said, i'm fair new at the 3e system.

Here, for future reference, here is how the point system works:

If a character is given 32 points then he has to 'buy' his stats, as follows:

8 - 0 pts
9 - 1 pts
10 - 2 pts
11 - 3 pts
12 - 4 pts
13 - 5 pts
14 - 6 pts
15 - 8 pts
16 - 10 pts
17 - 13 pts
18 - 16 pts

Then you add an subtract your racial bonuses and penalties. With your character it looked like this:

Str: 18 - 16 pts
Dex: 16 - 10 pts
Con: 17 - 13 pts
Int: 15 - 8 pts
Wis: 10 - 2 pts
Chr: 15 - 8 pts

Then modifying it with your racial modifications you came up with your stats. That's how we came up with the 57 pts.

As for the Katana, longsword would have been fine, or you could have changed one of your feats to Exotic Weapon Perficiency (Katana).

The gift from her parents is all well and good, but they and her gifts from her grandparents should not go over the 150 gp that I stipulated in character creation. #rd edition D&D is VERY balance oriented and part of that balance is in the characters wealth.

Yes, I have the 2nd edition eleven handbook, and it does mention these things, but with the permission of the DM. Even so, that was 2nd edition. No starting out with elven chain at first level anymore.

The skill points are not such a big deal as the others. Carve them down to 4 times your Int bonus plus 4 (for ranger) and it's all good.

Tell you what, if you straighten this character out (and I'll help if you want), I'll let her in.

Oh, and the permenant 'comprehend languages' has to go.

lol

well i tried to fix it. changed the katanas to scimitars, the masterwork composite lb to just a longbow with arrows/quiver and some miscellaneous gear. And i tried to keep the skill-points down to 28, which was what was in the char-generator thingie. Oh and i did get rid of the perm-comp languages. mebbe when she gets up a few levels, her grandma or pa will reward her r somthin. lol.

*makes a big hint-hint to almighty dm as she indulges in her rampant, barely held in check munchkinism (yes, i don't take myself too seriously:).....

Alright, Kirinke, thanks for making those changes. Being the 'almighty' DM, I'll take your request into concideration. But for now, there are a few things that I need to point out:
  1. The 3.5 ranger is VERY different from the 3.0 ranger. Follow THIS link to the SRD (System Reference Document) that holds all of the rules we'll be using in this adventure. Once to that page, follow the link to Basic Character Classes II (Paladin through Multiclassed Characters) and scroll down to Ranger. As you'll read, Rangers have the virtual feats of Ambidexterity (which has been taken out of 3.5) and two-weapon fighting style. With this in mind, you actually (as long as you are wearing light armor, which Studded leather is) have a fre feat to pick.
  2. Rangers start with a D10 Hit Die, so your Hitpoints will actually be 10
  3. You still have 2 atribute points too many. 18 Str is 16 pts, 15 Dev is 8 pts, 12 Con is 4 pts and 10's in everything else is 6 more points. 16+8+4+6=34. If you lower your dex by one point, you'll have the 32 pt character, and game play wise there would be no difference at this level (the bonus for a 16 is the same as a 17).
  4. Now that you have lowered your intelegence and have an Int bonus of +0, you only have access to 16 points worth of skills (4(4+0)=16) instead of the 28.
  5. Your Saves have also been effected by your change in stats. They should now be Fort +2 Reflex +3 Will +0.
  6. Your armor class should be AC: 16 Touch: 13 Flatfooted: 13
  7. Wild Empathy is a class feature in 3.5, but not 3.0 (As you probably have noticed from the SRD).
  8. WIth your lowered Intellegence, you only get your base languages of Common and Elven, the others will need to go.
  9. This is just a heads up (I'm not sure if you know this or not, and thought I would tell you straight up front so you're not discouraged later), but Weilding two weapons normally penalizes you -6 with your primary hand and -10 to your secondary hand. With Two -Weapon Fighting feat the penalties are lowered to -4 with your Primary hand and -8 with your secondary hand. With Ambidexterity it lowers the penalty to -4 to your primary weapon and -4 to your secondary weapon. This is were you are right now, so with your Strength of 18 and BAB of +1, you would get a +1 to hit with both of your weapons (+4 (Str) +1 (BAB) -4 (Two-Weapon penalty) = +1). There are two ways of lowering, increasing this. Is your secondary weapon is a light weapon (see equipment link in SRD), then the penalty will be lowered to -2 for you primary weapon and -2 for your secondary weapon. You also have that on feat available to you. If you like the idea of fighting with two same length mediam blades, then take Weapon Focus (Scimitar). That will give you +1 to hit with Simitars raising your to hit to +2 for both of your weapons.
  10. You have 15 gold and 4 Silver left after your equipment (good job!)

I know that I've hit you with a lot right now, and I'm sorry. I hope this does not discourages you from playing.

Thanks,
Mythe
