I love, love, love Classic Monsters.
• I love that the grue is the Zork grue, and not the lame-ass D&D ones. (Seriously, who thinks those things are cool?)
• I love that a bunch of the monsters taken out of the SRD have counterparts for C&C now.
• I love that some of the goofier monsters from the Fiend Folio at 1E are back.
• The artist either not knowing or not wanting to stick with the D&D definition of a "gorgon" actually makes the gorgorimera more interesting now.
• I love that the niblog is not an instant "screw you, you lose" move from the DM -- and only a little bit tougher than his single hit die would indicate.
• GREAT picture of the terrasque.
• I'm also amused that the artist didn't read that lurkers (above) are only found inside caves -- the picture of one blending in with the clouds above in a way makes it a more interesting monster.
The only minor problem I have is that since so many of the names are tweaked, presumably for legal CYA reasons, that someone with a better collection of 1E and 2E source material than me needs to create a master list of what monsters in Classic Monsters map to what critters in older books, for ease of use when converting classic materials. Some, like the "Tween" becoming the "Twin," are easy, but some of the various shaggy humanoids all blend together for me.
Awesome book, and I'm glad I supported it on Kickstarter.
