Cleaning a battlemat

Indeed, the moral of the story is *never* leave marks on your Battlemat for any appreciable length of time (i.e., overnight or longer), unless you really like those marks a lot. Even wet-erase marks will stain, if left long enough.

I've been pretty fortunate in the past. I once left marks on this mat for MONTHS between campaigns (not intentionally) and it came clean. So I guess I've gotten a bit lax.

After trying a wide range of cleaners and solvents tonight, including the dreaded nail-polish remover (don't worry, I was careful with it and removed neither the lines nor the stains), I've still got marks on the mat. I may try the "leave it in the sunshine" trick and see if that helps.

I've got a big pad of 1 inch grid paper that I can make do with for a while if necessary. I might even consider aligning a couple sheets of it and taking it to be laminated if I want a new battlemat on the cheap.

Any further advice that might render that unnecessary would be welcome.
