Cleric spells

Hi
I would like to know just how to read this on page 20 of the players hand book ........

"All Clerics have their own spells , bestowed upon them by their deity for correct and diligent prayers and deeds."

My Cleric "Red" has " Sif " as a Deity ...... Thor's wife .........
Norse Myth " Power Over battle Skills "

Does this "Q" from page 20 mean ????? That there are spells bestowed upon my cleric from " Sif "....... "Over and Above" ..... What is in the Players Hand Book and the Unearthed Arcana ??????? And if so just what would some of those spells be ???????

Also is it at all possible to some how ask Gary Gygax what his opinion would be on this and just what he ment by this statement ???????

Thank you in Adv. for your time and help .......Ken :) Toolndie

I believe it simply means that clerics have their own spell list, different from that of wizards, or that of druids. Only in AD&D 2e there were added spheres of spells (which have been replaced by domains in 3e). As such, in original DnD, clerics of Thor were no different from clerics of Isis. Maybe an evil cleric would memorize reversed versions of spells such as cure light wounds or remove fear, but other than that all clerics were identical.

Mmmmh... this has been a long time now. I remember the first evil npc cleric I encountered, who did cast Feigh Death as we were wining the fight.
