D&D 5E Changing the Cleric Spell List Da/Nyet?

So had an interesting discussion about a Cleric of Sharess. Player was asking about being allowed to use summon familiar (cat) despite it not being a Cleric Spell. For Sharess AKA Bast I would probably allow it.

Just because I was bored I looked up her Specialty Priest in Powers and Pantheons and she had minor access to animal sphere. In 5E terms it's level 1-3 Druidic spells involving animals.

Anyway a total conversion would be a pain but what would you think if a DM recreated a Spell List based off the Faith's and Avatars trilogy from 2E for a cleric. Basically a Cleric variant with a custom Spell List by deity. Players choice to use that or the 5E Cleric list. Domain choice is unaffected.

I do it kinda simpler. Look at (for example) the domain spells. Mostly two themed spells per level.

When and if I have special god specific spells, I slot them into a similar table, if the table gets full, I figure they have enough custom spells and they are done.

As a side note, players only choose spells from the PH, all other spells are lost divine magic and must be found, usually as a deity specific spell!

I forgot to say, I would not build their entire spell list from scratch. Too much work, give them a couple per level and call it good.

At one point, I'd converted all of the divine magic spells to 2e spheres, it would have allowed me to do exactly this.

An easier way though, is to change the domain spells a little. I used to create altered domains based on the god, there is a thread somewhere here that shows how I'd have changed the Light sphere to represent Porphoros, the god of craft from Theros.

That's another way. Bad deal if you only want find familiar (cat).

Guiding bolt combat sphere?
