Cloistered Cleric

Played one to 4th level. He was good.

He took the Trickery and Travel domains, so he had many things to spend his extra skill points on. He was more of a support guy than a front-liner, but he did manage to lay down some hurt, and he kept the group alive.

I would have liked to get him access to Tumble and Move Silently, but otherwise, it was great.

Cheers, -- N

I dm one thats just hit 10th level, player happy, i'm happy, game running smoothly

he's taken luck and fire domain so he can sling a few offensive spells in as well

IMHO, the Cloistered Cleric should be the default cleric, since it only takes a level dip into Fighter to bring it near the standard Cleric, combat-wise.

Agreed 100%. This allows you to play an actual clergyman or a 'holy warrior', whereas the current default is squarely 'holy warriror' right out of the gate. More options is good, says I.

In most of my games I only allow cloistered clerics, even toned them down to one domain only and no armor. I give them wizard bonus feats and more skillpoints/class skills though.

It´s never been a problem so far. The cleric class is strong enough in every respect and a spellcasting only cleric can stand his own in most campaigns.

I've got a PC using a slight variant (called it a "wandering cleric" and gave it Travel domain for free instead of knowledge). Quite powerful. He's able to focus on casting and turning. He's never done much in melee but that's quite alright since he spends most combat rounds casting spells or turning anyway. Wizards work fine and a cloistered cleric is basically a non-combat wuss like a wizard, but with different spells (neither better nor worse, I'd argue, given the selection of clerical offense) and better skills and saves.

I'm playing a cloistered cleric currently and I think it's great. I'm a primary caster and play as such - low AC and BaB aren't any more of a problem than they are for a wizard :) I'm not the combat machine that some clerics are, but I still think the class is very fun and balanced enough (since the cleric begins on the strong side of balanced).

I'm playing a cloistered cleric/bard in a Savage Tides PbP game. He's working great so far. My GM let me stack the Lore abilities (which makes sense, otherwise I'd get two lore rolls a round). The free identify spells are a huge asset as well. My character is basically a skill monkey - tons of skill points, lots of options.

I'll eventually go into Mystic Theurge and get cleric/bard spells.
