c'mon... Scared Lands?

Can anyone give me some more details on the Scared Lands campaign setting? I mean, can it really be better than Forgotten Realms or GreyHawk?

My main question though, is I've been using FR and GH for ages now.... And the material support for them is astounding. Why in the world would I want to switch?

The Scarred Lands has a great feel to it. Even though it's only been around for a couple of years there is a lot of support (book support as well as fans). But more importantly, the books written for it are well done.

Scarred Lands is not for everyone. It does have a more nasty feel then FR or GH.

Because in this world, what you do MATTERS. FR, the level of cannon is so deep, and unyielding, that if you were destroy, say Mystra, the whole WORLD would no longer be Forgotten Realms.

In the Scarred Lands, if you kill a god, well that's fine but just be sure you CAN do it. Finding that +5 sword of godslaying MIGHT not be that easy. Not to mention you might have a swarm of Slitheren/Ratmen trying to help kill you as well, since they might be mad that THEY can't do it! ;)

The Scarred Lands, for heroes, means that what you do matters. That instead of "Oh you might fail but even if you do some NPC will save you." as in FR or in GH "Well you fail but after a while it won't matter cause some other adventuring group will succeed." Here it's "Well if you fail, civilization will fall, so please don't mess up."

FR: I have never had anyone show up and save the PCs in FR. It just does not seem to fit with the setting. What the heroes do does matter. In FR it seems that there is an indestructibility to the world and that it is more about the status quo. Messing up might cause the destruction of an empire, but thats about it.

GH: Greyhawk has always seemed to me that few care if you succeed or not. Even if you saved the world the most you might get is a nod from a tenth level character, not because you saved the world but because he doesn't want to get on your bad side because you are powerful enough to save the world.

Just my thoughts on the two other worlds mentioned. I try not to judge settings based on the badly written 2e materials.

Aaron.

PAH! Scarred lands is very well written, and Ive read through R&R, Ghelspad Setting, and the two Creature Collections, but Ive not had time to play any Scarred Lands yet. Im currently running 4 players through a homebrew setting, but I plan on moving to scarred lands when feasible.

While I respect your opinion Jester, it's just not so. If you killed of HALF the faerunian gods and most of the racial ones, people would be SCREAMING about you disrupting the fabric of the realms. I mean if Mystra's dead, or at least incapaciated, the weave don't work! Just that simple. Where as in the Scarred Lands, NO ONE is in charge of magic. And that's just fine with us.

Right well even so, there's not a lot of GH being written. It's more of homgizied version of all the stuff WotC has put out. But part of saving the world IS getting some recognition. I doubt that Mordenkein would like it if you saved magic, since he thinks that might disrupt some balance he's been working at. Not exactly what I'd call a great +/- ratio in my book.

Glad you're having fun then Breakdaddy. I think you'll like the Termana Gaz when it comes out. Should be fun. FINALLY a empire for Gnolls! :D
