"Deep Rising" is one of my all time favorites. It was written and directed by the same man who brought you the Mummy movies--Stephen Sommers, and it really shows. It has one of my all time favorite scenes:

Characters are trapped inside an elevator, with typical elevator music playing in the background.
One person whispers 'What's that sound?'
Another character answers 'Uh...the girl from Imphagnema?' (sp?)

In the outrageous climatic scene, where two people are trying to exit a rapidly sinking ship on jet-skis, you can almost hear the Keeper 'Okay, make your luck roll!'

I just got done watching The Ninth Gate, and though I found the ending pretty lame, I thought the rest of the movie was pretty CoC-ish...

I also saw The Others at the dollar theater tonight (yes, I'm trying to research some spookiness for an upcoming game) and though it didn't seem to quite fit the HPL genre, it sure was creepy.

"The Ninth Gate" is perfectly Lovecraftian in theme and tone. I actually liked the ending... though I was left wanting more. The ending made you think, which is not something most viewers want to do.

Hmm... I wasn't trying to devalue Dieter's opinion. (Though I was quite off-topic.) He himself admitted that many horror fans consider the movies blasphemous. I was merely trying to explain away some of the misconceptions that people have about the movies in question. Sorry if I came off as hostile. :(

And sorry if I came off a little heavy handed. Friends? :)

That point about Romero's Dead Trilogy zombies and the Return of the Living Dead trilogy being totally different creatures in origin and behavior needed to be made. Most people are exceedingly ill-informed on this subject, which is crucial to gaining a full understanding of zombies as monsters and zombie films in general. :)

Crapola. I completely forgot about Deep Rising. It one of my absolute b-movie faves. There's so many one-liners in that movie.

(after the pirates take over the ship to find the entire crew and passengers missing/devoured by the tentacled beast)

"Where is everyone?!"
"I dunno...sleeping?"

And who can forget the great line by Treat Williams in regards to his morality.

"We do not care as long as the money's there."

Oh...also it's the girl from IPANEMA....a small coastal city in Brazil. :)

"The 9th Gate" is based on a Spanish author's book, "El Club Dumas". The book is really great, and the ending is not cheesy and lame as the film, it's way more creepy and interesting...

Curiously enough, here the director is also Spanish. If you liked it, you should see his first film, "Tesis", the scariest film I'm even watched...
