CoC spells given level

Crothian

First Post
Has anyone assigned levels to the spells in CoC? Many of them are cool and I think would make a good addition after the attribute and insanity drain is eliminated.

Um, it's already in the book. I don't know exactly where, but it does list all the spells levels if they were DnD spells. That's all you really wanted to know, right? Well it's in there... but if you wanted someone else to do a different variation on it, I don't know where to look.

It's either in the DnD conversion section, or at the end of the magic section I think...

What I would like to see is more DnD spells converted into CoC style casting, with ability costs, etc..

Has anyone reverse engineered the system used in CoC? Maybe system is too strong a word- it looks as if the CoC spell costs are driven largely by the designer's discretion- maybe guidelines is a better word.

From the Lovecraft that I've read, half the time spellcasting kills or drives insane the mage who cast the spell. So, IMHO, CoC characters aren't really supposed to cast spells. If they do, it should be like once per game, durring the most climactic part. Definitely the DnD style stuff.

I guess you're right. Magic in Call of Cthulhu is not Dungeons 'N Dragons, it's Do Not Disturb that which lies dreaming....

But spellcasting via ability damage would be one approach to a low-magic kind of setting, and I would be interested in seeing attempts to implement it.

Yes, it would. I'd like it to be less damaging then CoC. OR make it a skill roll or saving throw to avoid or just lessen the amount of ability drain.
