Re: pick the right shoes.
Absolute necessities for your characters...
Cleats on your running shoes. Most of your running will be through forests, on volcanic rock, or over sand dunes. Make sure you have necessary traction.
If you carry a gun, it needs to be portable enough to shoot yourself, or big enough to kill whatever is stalking you. My characters always carry a glock and a Barret Model 82. If the Barret is unavailable, a 10-Gauge shotgun with slug ammo works well.
If you are going to read a Mythos book, be sure to have someone on hand who can take you to the sanitarium, just in case.
Hire unskilled laborers at minimum wage to lead you by at least 20 feet when exploring a place known to be infested by Mythos horrors. At most, you will pay the equivalent salary of one person for one year.
Wear light kevlar vests under clothing. Despite the ineffectiveness against knives and tentacles, any protection is better than bare skin and clothing - and you will thank yourself after meeting the first gun-toting cultist.
Beware of Fire-worshipping Firefighters carrying "supposed" fire extinguishers.
I can't stress this enough.
Train yourself or a close personal friend in both medicine and psychoanalysis. Hire extremely beefy meat-shields to stand around him (and you) at all times. Never let him out of your sight.
Never trust a doctor of any type. They are the first ones to get seduced by the extreme horrors that you seek to stop.
Glasses with Rose-colored lenses help you when seeing dead allies and cosmic horrors.
Always keep an ankle-strap worn and filled with one bullet of every major caliber. This way you can take your own life at any time.
I hope these tips help fight the Evil!
