Coffee?

Never had coffee, although I suspect it is around. I drink Tea or water, usually, but I adventure with dwarves, they drink ale around the clock.

Honestly, I hate that kind of anachronism. Starting the day with coffee, orange juice, and cereal screams "late 20th-century America" to me.

Or 17th century, or 18th century...

This kind of anachronism also drives me nuts... sometimes these things were around. Assuming that they weren't is just as big an anachronism sometimes. (For example: The Romans had a ground beef patty served on toasted buns, often with a sauce made from ground mustard seeds and horseradish - or in other words, they had the hamburger, complete with mustard (but no ketchup) and they served it at booths in the base of the colloseum. The concession stand goes back a long way too...)

*EDIT* Small beer dates back at least as far as the 12th century.

Damn fine cup o' java!

In my main world food played an interesting part in illustrating day to day life. It was not the overdone plot nusiance of ST: Voyager, but the subtle details showing a PC or NPC personality, like in Deep Space Nine.

Elves for the most part drank Tea, though some were obsessed with it. When my Elves began to have regular contact with an Asian culture, import and export of tea played a major economic role.

Humans drank tea, but were more frequently purchasing coffee, a new and very popular beverage from two Kingdoms in the southern hemisphere.

Dwarves varied. Those living in Human majority populations or very mixed populations were taking a shine to coffee. More traditional Dwarves drank Morning Mead, a slighty bittersweet beer, deep red brown in color, that was served hot or at the very least warm.

An Elf who enjoyed the bitter taste of coffee was considered very eccentric, almost more Human. Elves saw members of any species with a solid knowledge of exotic teas to be more refined in taste and manner. Green Tea was viewed as relaxing, almost spiritual, while members of the Rangers Guild refused to undertake any major outting without their morning coffee.
