Cohort Familiar

Is there any RAW way to have your familiar/companion/special mount also be your cohort?

The DMG has some guidance about combining special mount and cohort, but I'm not sure about familiars or animal companions

You could just give the familiar or special mount class levels. They are smart enough to take them. The animal companion would be tougher, but you could awaken them (although that makes them no longer an animal companion), or somehow raise it's Intelligence so it could take class levels.

There isn't any RAW way for your familiar or animal companion to also be your cohort. There was some talk over in the House Rules forum about just such a thing though. If you just used the same rules for making a special mount into a cohort, I think it would work out pretty well.
