Would you allow cohorts and followers with item creation feats to create items for the party on demand?

As long as they take some of the XP from the Players when they are involved in combats. Though Followers are of NPC classes, and I dont know how well of a magic creator an Adept is.

What do you mean? I thought, when creating items cooperatively, one person or the other took the XP hit, and not a combination of both.

Mainly, I'm looking at the XP drain and time it takes to create items. Giving a cohort 4,000 gold to make 2 2nd level Pearls of Power (8 days) while you're making your Blessed Book (10 days) can be a real time saver.

In the rules as written, followers can only be Commoners, Experts, and Warriors.

I would allow cohorts to create items - but use common sense when judging what items they make and whether they would just hand them over to the PC! A cohort isn't going to impoverish himself in terms of gold or XP at the behest of the player. They're going to ask themselves "why should I make gauntlets of mighty whoop*ss for Bob instead of bracers of armor for me?"

Good point. Didn't see that.

I would expect the cohort to get paid for the monetary amount of the magic item. Therefore, he has his own half share of gold that he can use to make his own items.

Question is, would the cohort require a fee of gold per XP spent? For NPC item creation, the DMG suggests 5gp per XP. Would the cohort charge something like this or would he do it in service to his master?

As long as they don't say "Ok, my Cohort takes my followers off on an adventure." and then have the players just expect me to give XP to the cohorts and followers. I mean what I say, as long as the followers and cohorts are involved in the players adventure, and as long as the cohorts and followers gain XP through adventuring with the players, and that would deduct from the XP the players would get from their adventures.

Yes. Well, Cohorts only.

As Cohorts only gain 1/2 XP, they won't be able to create many magic items. If they spend all their XP creating magic items - and don't forget the time requirements as well! - then they won't level, and will die in a later adventure.

Cheers!

I'd say that depends on how the PC treats him.

If he's treated as a valuable member of the party, if the PC is willing to make sacrifices for him - basically, if the NPC has a reason to want to give up their experience and life force to make the PC stronger - then he's more likely to do so without compensation.

If he's looked on as a magic item factory and backup artillery, if he's constantly overlooked for magic items the party finds in favor of PCs, if he feels like he's second fiddle - then he will probably take whatever he can get from the PC.

You can't just generalize and say "all cohorts will do this" - it's a roleplaying thing.

Note that the DMG fee of 5 gp/xp is already subsumed into the market value of magic items (25 gp/xp). The 5 gp/xp is for casting spells that need xp.
