Cohort levels stay 2 behind PCs (fixed my math)

Wow, I have totally not been paying attention; I didn't even realize this changed in 3.5. I've still been under the assumption that the cohort gets 50% as much XP as his leader.

Looks as if Leadership is even more attractive than it used to be...

I run a group with 3 PCs and 4 cohorts, and we were noticing that the newer cohorts (the ones selected later in the campaign) would come in a level or two higher than the older cohorts-- it was a glitch in the math that made it really difficult for the PCs to want to keep their older cohorts, as well as one that posed some gameplay problems.

NPCs four levels lower than the main PCs were having a really tough time surviving, nonetheless being useful. About the only good they were was reducing the "average party level," thereby jacking up the XP award. This new system looks better all the way around.

Isn't the XP award relative to your character and not the average of the party. To allow lower level player to catch up with the stronger one?

Beating an group of orc will bring much more experience to a 1 level than a 7 th level, especially if he can learn from the 7th level by watching him.

Isn't the formula the following

you get the XP award from the table base on YOUR level / divided by the number of people in the party?

In 3.5, it is (and was the proposed formula for calculating XP in FRCS)

Thanks,

I never played 3.0, I'm an old player who just got back in a few months ago, played D&D, AD&D1 and 2.

Got to say I love this 3.5 edition.

I want to clarify something about the 3.5 XP system as it relates to cohorts. First, review the paragraph about cohorts in the Leadership description. It says that The cohort does not count as a party member when determining the party’s XP. This means that in (contact)'s example of a party of 3 PCs and 4 cohorts, only the 3 PCs get their XP based on the table in the DMG. The cohorts get their XP based on their level divided by their master's level times the XP gained by the master.

Here's an example loosely based on (contact)'s characters.

Heydricus, Prisantha, and Jespo Crim are all level 15.
Heydricus has two cohorts: Dabus (level 13) and Lucius (level 11).
Prisantha has a cohort, Gwendolyn (level 13).
Jespo Crim has a cohort, Regda (level 12).

The group gets in a big fight with 9 monsters: 1 CR 14, 1 CR 13, 1 CR 12, 1 CR 11, 1 CR 10, and 4 CR 8s. (This is about an EL 17 encounter, by the way.)

Victorious, the group calculates their XP. Because the cohorts do not count as party members, we only need to worry about the 3 PCs (each 15th level) and the 9 monsters.

From the XP table in the DMG, we cross reference a 15th level character with a CR 14 monster: 3000 XP. We then divide this number by the number of PCs (only!): 3000 / 3 = 1000.

Repeat this process for each monster.

CR 14: 3000 / 3 = 1000
CR 13: 2250 / 3 = 750
CR 12: 1500 / 3 = 500
CR 11: 1125 / = 375
CR 10: 750 / 3 = 250
4 CR 8: 375 / 3 = 125 * 4 = 500

TOTAL: 1000 + 750 + 500 + 375 + 250 + 500 = 3375 XP per PC

Cohorts get their XP like this.

Dabus: 13/15*3375 = 2925
Lucius: 11/15*3375 = 2475
Gwendolyn: 13/15*3375 = 2925
Regda: 12/15*3375=2700

All clear now? ;)
