Cohort Mount

A few creatures have cohort adjustment in the 3.5 MM...usually alingment has to be pretty close as well. Do you have a specific mount in mind? I've found working with specifics to this type of question works better then general answers.

Well, a half-celestial unicorn is probably out.

A pegasis, a griffon, or a hippogryph are the critters would most easily fit the bill. You should also mention what level your character is; but since you mention messing with rings in another thread, I guess your character's level is 12+.

If you're really high-level, you oughta look at getting a dragon (or getting a Nightmare, if you're evil).

The ECL of most of the candidates for you're after should be something like Hit Dice + 2 or so; advance the HD of the creature if it falls short of how strong a cohort you could have. Creatures with neat powers are worth a bit more than HD +2; more like HD +4 or +5.

The problem with getting a flying creature cohort is that it's gonna be a flying bulls-eye, and may well get blasted right out from under you.

Crothian is absolutely correct. You're better off getting a flying carpet, IMO.

Or, go buy the Draconomicon, and bribe, er, persuade your GM to allow the Dragon Cohort feat, assuming there're any suitably-sized dragons of a usefully-low ECL for you to pick from.

Sorcerers level is 18 with a 24 charisma, so he should be able to get a 16 lvl Cohort.I'm just not sure how that translates into Monster HD, especiallywhen you add in special abilities. Thanks for the Int requirement to have a mount, I did not know about that one.

Dragon would be nice. Not sure what would be allowed though. Dont have any feats left over for Dragon Cohort feat. I dont have that book but I assume that feat allows you to get a dragon cohort and has speicific guidelines for doing so.

As far as how tough it is, I'm not that interested in its combat ability, although more would be better, as much as I need a way to travel around in style and maybe have an NPC Cohort that would be interesting to travel and interact with.

That's translate into a 14 or so HD creature with no cool powers, or perhaps a 10-12 HD creature that does get neat powers.

But at that level, we should definately be looking at something exotic. A celestial nightmare (a Daydream?), perhaps?

A normal one is a 6HD creature, perhaps worth another 4 levels due to natural armor, stat mods, flight, and being able to move through space and time (hey, it says Level Adjustment: +4 (cohort) right in the entry). So 10 levels, with another 6 left over. 4 levels for extra hit dice, and another 2 to slap the Celestial template and thus make it a good-aligned creature?

Actually securing the thing might rightfully be an adventure in of itself, but I think a L18 character wouldn't feel bad about having that as a travelling companion.

Add the Hit Dice to the Level Adjustment (LA) in the monster's entry to get the level equivalent (or ECL - Effective Character Level).

A Young Gold Dragon is Large, has 11 HD and a LA of +5 for an ECL of 16. It could work as a mount if he can tolerate your chaotic nature.

A Griffon is Large, has 7 HD and a LA of +3 for an ECL of 10. Give it the Half-Celestial template (+4 LA) and 2 more HD, and you have an ECL 16 9-HD Half-Celestial Griffon mount. Alternatively, give it the Half-Dragon template (+3 LA) and 3 more HD, and you have an ECL 16 10-HD Half-Dragon Griffon.

Complete Warrior also expands the Improved Familiar feat to allow you to summon a hippogriff as a familiar.

For a Griffon, which has a +3 LA IIRC, that'd be a pretty big one. ^_^

From "Dragons as Cohorts", table 3-14 in the Draconomicon (not including the -3 ECL "bonus" for the Dragon Cohort feat), from ECL 14 to 16:

Young Green, ECL 16
Very young Gold, ECL 16
Very young Red, ECL 15
Young Copper, ECL 15
Very young Silver, ECL 14
Young Brass, ECL 14

Be interested in it's survivability. While travelling overland, it will be a prime target for anything that ambushes you.
