What would you do if you weren't a game designer?
Monte Cook:
Well, I was almost a history teacher. And I was almost an ad copywriter. I suppose if game designing suddenly went away I'd pursue the fiction end of writing more aggressively (I've written two novels and a number of short stories and would like to write more).
In some parallel universe, however, Monte Cook went on to get his doctorate in psychology and went into sleep research. I find sleep and dreams very fascinating. But in this universe, Monte Cook was only able to channel that interest into one of the adventures in d20 Call of Cthulhu rather than full-fledged research.

First of all, tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do in the real world?
Kevin Kulp:
When I’m not doing game design, I’m an industrial fatigue and alertness consultant for companies working night shifts. In other words, I’m a sleep expert. If a company like a power plant or a widget manufacturer runs night shifts, I come in and tell them how to help the employees *not* fall asleep on the job at 3 am. I also do a lot of seminars on shiftwork, focusing on how to design shift schedules that are easier to work.
