Is this real or just someone's idea of a bad Net troll. Note: My friend sent this to me and I'm still wait for confirmation from him as to where he got it from.)

The Telegraph, Aug. 10, 2004
A collapsing volcano could trigger a vast tidal wave capable of wiping New York, Washington and Miami off the map, warn geologists.

Geologists are concerned that an unstable flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canaries is in danger of sliding into the sea.

If shaken loose by a volcanic eruption, the huge slab of rock would send a tsunami more than 150 meters high racing across the Atlantic at the speed of a jumbo jet.

The wave would strike the west African coast with a wall of water more than 300ft high in two to three hours. Within three to four hours, a 33ft high wave would smash into the south coast of England, causing immense damage. New York, Washington, Boston and Miami would be hit by successive waves abound 20 meters high. Tens of millions of people could die.

Hmm, could be the next 'disaster movie of the year'.
You bet.

The hero would have the job of trying to persuade the proper authorities to evacuate everyone from the East Coast in the eight or so hours before the Big Wave hits. Good luck, hero-dude. :]

Just so long as they don't do any cheesy stuff like having the Big Nasty stop just short of swallowing the hero and heroine, like they did in that made-for-TV earthquake flick I saw.

You all do realise that you're more likely to die in a car accident than this, right ?

It is interesting geological news, but do not let it frighten you. There's enough paranoia currently going on to last you a life time. Take note that we all die someday, that's inevitable. What you do until then, cower in fear or go out and live, is up to you.

Don't forget the giant killer asteroids!

I find it funny that whenever I see one of the shows on Discovery and the like on such things they always have someone bemoaning the fact that there are more people working at a McDonalds than watching the skies for killer asteroids, as if it makes any difference.

I for one, choose cowering in fear.
