Collegiate Wizard feat - big boost to diviners?

If magic is scarce, magical academies don't exist, so you should fall into the "does not like Harry Potter" category. :p

I should have written "magic items", not magic...

Read again what I said before you quote me wrong!

Hint: The "as intended" refers to the second part of the sentence. ;)

Ok. But now it scares me if it is intended as having as much freedom as suggested around.
Still, IMO a DM who is very strict with scribing is the least likely to think the feat is balanced, and therefore allow it.

Then it's no problem to aquire new spells, no need for the feat.

What's scary about that? The PHB even has rules for how to aquire spells from other wizards, or from scrolls, and how to buy scrolls... I'd say, that they intended the DMs and players to use those rules, otherwise what would be the point in writing them?

That's certainly a problem with such a DM... ;)

Bye
Thanee

The current LG rules don't allow for it since it's a non-core feat restricted to first level and you're not allowed to pick non-core feats until 3rd level.

That said, it would be an incredibly lame feat in Living Greyhawk anyway. You see, wizards can buy scrolls, craft Boccobs' Blessed Books, and copy spells from other wizard PCs in Living Greyhawk. And, maybe once every fifteen modules or so, they'll stumble across an enemy wizard who actually has a spellbook too. It's much easier to spend a little bit of gold than to blow a feat.

BTW, it'd be nice to see if Living Greyhawk and other groups will ever allow this (my guess is NO).

Actually it costs only 300gp (ignoring the 12,500gp one-time investment).

50gp per spell level to get someone to allow you to copy the spell and 0gp for scribing it into your Boccob's blessed book.

Bye
Thanee

Yup, I know Thanee. And unfortunately, that 12,500gp one-off investment is the hard part. And wizards in my part of the campaign world don't seem to like sharing much. (I recall reading in another discussion some months ago - I think the wizard vs psion one - where you explained your PC wizard has a Boccob's Blessed Book, and Monty Python's "you lucky, lucky bastard" scene came to mind...).

Cheers, Al'Kelhar

PS Now I've had a chance to read the Expanded Psionics Handbook, I agree with you about the psion. Ooh look, another non-core WotC product to render all characters that have gone before sub-optimal and inefficient. Why don't all us wizard-lovers just pack up and go play with ourselves, cos' there's no need for our weeny characters any more.

It's probably because arcane casters are sub-optimal and inefficient to begin with. So anything afterwards seems overpowered. Psions are balanced when compared with other character classes. The contents of 3.5 was made in response to irrational whiners calling for the nerfing of arcane classes without regard the overall balance of the classes. I'm pretty sure none of the changes were play tested at all. Probably in hopes that players will get sick of playing constantly dying crippled arcane casters and buy additional supplements in hopes of materials allowing them to play viable characters.

You could do this or you can stop playing arcane casters and instead discover the fun of playing overpowered divine spellcasters.
