Combat Expertise to Starship Expertise

First Post
I see some Austin-ites here & I currently moved to Austin, TX now & am thinking of starting a campaign here.
We used to do some starship combat senarios & I created this feat to emulate to Combat Expertise feat for SWRPG. It kept the experienced pilot from getting blown out of space so often.
What do you think

----

New Feat:
Starship Expertise

Prerequisite: Intelligence 13, Pilot 6 ranks
Benefit: A starship pilot may declare use of this feat at the beginning of his round. The pilot (and/or the crew) can take a penalty of up to -5 on starship attack rolls and add the same number (up to +5) to the starship’s defense. The changes last until the pilot’s next action. The bonus granted is a dodge bonus thus it stacks with other dodge bonuses.
Normal: A pilot not able to utilize Starship Expertise can fly defensively by applying a +2 to defense yet taking a -4 to attacks by pilot and/or gunners.

How does this work if a seperate character serves as the ship's gunner? Does the pilot apply the penalty to the other PC's attack roll in order to gain the bonus to defense? (I hate the idea that a PCs feat can apply a penatly to another PCs actions.)

Other than that, I have no problem with this feat at all.

It is INFINITELY better than the flying defensivly tactic (which gives a +2 defense but a -4 attk for gunners) or the full defense tactic (which gives a +4 defense but a -8 attk for gunners)
Some of our gunners weren't able to hit the broad side of a SD when flying defensively or full def. It was kinda funny tho.

I suppose that is true...and it fits. If the Captain shouts "Evasive Maneuvers," the PCs manning the guns should have a harder time targeting when the ship starts jinking back and forth.

If Starship Expertise is anything like Combat Expertise, both this and Flying Defensively should stack.

I assume the penalty affects all gunners' attack rolls on the ship the pilot is flying (the pilot who execute the Starship Expertise feat).
