Combat Leader: How to RP?

How are people RPing Combat Leader, especially if the adventurers are new to each other and have never worked together?

The warlord in the group I'm running has based his character on Saul Tigh from BSG. He claims the verbal abuse makes the rest of the group jumpier, and therefore quicker-acting in combat. I don't know how helpful that will be in your case, though.

Difficult. In the past, numbers were king. As long as you had a big enough "+ something" or "I can attack 6 times per round" group dynamics didnt matter cause the numbers would just pull you through.

Group dynamics and tactics matter now. Our group is a "mature" group (well, we are all dads now. Thats how long we have been playing) emraced this early and have been having a great time playing it. We let go of the old "personnel glory" thought pattern of 3.5 and earlier and embraced the new thinking...and it works. Dramaticly!

As for RP'ing the leader, the only thing I would advise is dont take the "leadership" bit too seriously. Everyone has to enjoy the experience and it sux when someone thinks they have the right to lord it over others. Encourage all players to participate and dont nominate leaders on the basis of perceived class mechanics.

I tend to shout, "You! Hit him again, soldier! ... and deal +4 damage!"

The other player, who just got a free attack (at +4 damage), is seems happy enough at the prospect to shout back, "Sir, yes, sir!" of his own volition.

Cheers, -- N

I play a Dragonborn Inspiring Warlord. Part of my background is that I'm not only royalty, but also a member of a notorious mercenary group. So I try to play the royal pride angle when "inspiring" myself ("Balasar of Honorblood will not be crushed by a measly KOBOLD!!!") and the soldier angle when dealing with my allies ("Dmitri! Strike on my command!").
