The Thief has been kinda in that role for a long time, and the Ranger has been similarly focused on that role a bit.
Before 3E (or at least before 2E Skills & Powers) they were the only class that could dual-wield weapons, and I think they have had fewer armor proficiencies than Fighters for a long time too.
Also, in 1E (Unearthed Arcana I think?) there was an Assassin class, which became a Thief Kit in 2E I think, and then became a core prestige class in 3E.
It certainly wasn't a prevalent role though before 3E's Rogue and Ranger, and 3.5's Scout, Ninja, etc.
