Combining D&D and Warhammer Fantasy Battle?

I'm thinking hard about a way to combine 4e D&D with Warhammer Fantasy Battle and I was wondering if anybody did this before.

I'd like to have a part of the adventure where the PCs lead big armies against the bad guys.

The idea is that I convert the PCs with their iconic abilities into WHFB stats and let them take part of the battle that way, but when they engage important enemy heroes, monsters or elite units then play out the combat with 4e rules, them zoom back out to the large battle level.

Skill checks etc. could help buff friendly units etc.

Does anyone have experience with such a combination?
Suggestions, ideas?

Thanks!

It sounds possible. I'm not familiar with Warhammer, but I have run mass battles by combining D&D and Risk. Pretty soon I'm planning to use the Conquest of Nerath rules to do something similar.

There used to be a classic arc for WHFRP campaigns that way - but I'm not sure WFB's formation fighting would combine neatly with 4e. What does "Come and Get It" do to a square of goblins?

On the other hand I've long been of the view that 4e would combine brilliantly with Privateer Press's Warmachine/Hordes for larger skirmish level games.

IIRC, then WHF formation combat sort of boiled down to

"You've got a bunch of identical guys, any in base to base with a foe can attack. Remove casualties from the back of the formation. Roll morale once 50% are dead and for every loss after that. If you fail morale, roll to see how fast you run, and how fast your opponents run after you. If they run faster, you're butchered, otherwise you need to stand around making morale checks to get back into formation"

Yeah?

Just use D&D combat rules for who hits who (and for how much damage heroes take, and for solo units etc) and make formation members minions. Then use the wh rules for formation fighting. Essentially that lets you have massive amounts of minions on the field, only need to move them in big blocks and only need to account for the attacks of 1/10th of them (if that), while leaving normal combats untouched.

Would that work?
