Can Vital Strike be combined with Deadly Stroke into a single attack, or must one be chosen over another in a given round?

Vital Strike specifies when you use "the attack action." That's a standard action listed in the combat section. Deadly Stroke says, as a standard action, make a single attack. Since Deadly Stroke does not involve the attack action, Vital Strike does not apply.
