Coming Soon from Vigilance Press... Fantasci

Vigilance

Once we were legends. Walking side by side with creatures of myth on farflung worlds, soaring through the skies with ease and even mounting chariots that approached the realm of the Gods themselves. For his arrogance man was struck down and the Gods’ fury scorched the world. Despite this grave punishment and the warnings of the Church of the True, there are those who persist in experimenting with machines, called “infernal tech” for weaponry and transportation. Even more disturbing to the Church are those who have embraced black magic and witchcraft. For these transgressions the Black Horde walk the land. Against these hordes heroes emerge, some using the very infernal tech the Church says has caused the Gods to visit another punishment on mankind.

Fantasci is about those who stand against the Black Horde. Heroes to the people, heretics to the church, they are the Men of Legend. The Heroes of Fantasci.

Fantasci is a d20 Fantasy rules set by Charles Rice that will bring the feel of Japanese RPGs to d20.

Fantasci is a "ransom" project being funded through Paypal. More information on the project and how to get involved can be found here.

If the money is successfully raised, work on the project will begin and will take about 30 days. If not, all the money raised will be returned to those who contribute to the project.

As always, questions and comments welcome.

When you say Japanese RPGs, do you mean like console ones, or actual Japanese tabletop RPGs?

And how does the ransom aspect work? If people donate x, do they get a copy, or x2, get a bonus (like other ransoms, I think a printed copy, or maybe an autograph)? (Disclaimer, I'm too broke to contribute, but curious)

(That fundable website is interesting. Lots of pets who need operations. And the occasional stripper. Too bad the minimum is so high, otherwise I would use it to see if I could get enough people to buy me a copy of Castle Whiterock to review.)

If people donate they are assured the book will come out.

Once the donation level is reached, I'll write the book, and release it as a free PDF on RPGNow.

I think releasing it for everyone is good on several fronts. First, those who donate will be doing something good for the community.

But mostly, I think getting it out there will expose the book to a wider audience, making it easier for those running the game to find players, and also making supplements for it more viable.

For example, if only those who contributed got a copy of the book, then they would all have to like it to a supplement a go, if released under the same model.

There's actually been a number of RPG books released this way, and I think Greg Stolz is the writer who most often uses Fundable.

Grrr, I just spent so long searching their site and no strippers at all! You are a stripper tease, sir.

Sorry to get you all excited for nothing :o . Now that I look again, I misread something else as 'lap dancer'

Interesting. Why Fundable over an Open Design-like format?

I don't really know the "nuts and bolts" of how Open Design does their thing.

In a lot of ways I think I am doing some things they did, like the Google group I have set up for contributors so they can shape the game, and have a place where I can upload drafts as we go for folks to see how the game is coming along.

I went with fundable because I know that Dennis Detwiler and Greg Stolz do their ransom projects through there, and they're a couple of my favorite designers.

Also, in case only a few people were interested, I wanted something that wouldn't have me holding folks' money and redistributing it through paypal or whatever.

Just a bump to ask how this project is going. The new page doesn't list the maximum amount necessary to fund the project, or how much has been donated so far.

Hey there.

The donation side of the project has actually been canceled.

As development wore on, it became more clear to me that the best way to do the book was as a Modern20 campaign.

That necessitated making the book a pay project, under the auspices of RPGObjects.

I made the switch with the consent of the those who had already contributed, and the group I started for them will continue.

They will essentially get all the benefits they were getting before.

It's unfortunate that I had to jump in like a maniac like I always do, and then have to change course like this publically, but I think it's all for the good of the book.

I forgot that I should drop an update here as well, so thanks for posting this!

So, what are the practical implications of the change?

Will it still come out if it doesn't reach the target $600? And it will still be free, right?
