Don't forget the catacombs in Paris! A must-see for anybody who's ever wondered what a real dungeon (or for that matter, a necromancer's lair ;)) looks like...

Wow, Conail, you're a genuine Cataphile !

I've always wanted to go explore the non-public part of teh catacombs but I never had the guts ;)

Oxford was a total waste of time--too hard to get inside without a student contact.

Really? I find this somewhat surprising considering all the tourists I'm tripping over most of the time. What specifically proved dificult?

For clay's london trip: You may be interested in Body Worlds. It's not something you'll fine most places. (Or even in London much longer!)

Hey alsih, enjoy England.. I had fun there in oh, I dunno, 96 or so. One thing I enjoyed, though not in London, was York Minster. But of course, that's in York. If you go there, though, you can ride through the Jorvik Viking Centre, assuming it's still there.. that was a hoot.

Anyhow, have fun :)

Bodelian.

sigh.

And a lot of the other Oxford buildings. Without a student pass, no entry.

We scheduled things badly and didn't have time to take an "official" tour. The town was cool, but we really wanted to see the University itself. We walked around the outside of the buildings, and they were nice to look at, but that was about all we could do that day.

If we had known anybody cool there to hang out with, it'd have been different, of course . . .

Well, the situation has changed somewhat in the past 5 years or so. There are a few more buildings open to the public, but taking a tour is pretty much the only way to see the Bodleian.

Almost all the colleges are open to the public, most of the time. But there are times when they are closed to visitors completely (and sometimes inexplicably). It's really hit or miss I guess.

If you're not spending several days just in Oxford, you may have trouble seeing everything you want to see since getting in some places really depends on flexibility. (Besides, you'd probably need a whole day for the Ashmolean and another day for the University Science Musuem/Pitt Rivers.)

On the other hand, if you've come to see the University, you have to remember that is is still a working institution. If a few tourists get inconvenienced because the students don't want to be disturbed in the Upper Reading Room, well, tough.

If it's any consolation, most students don't get to see all of the Bodleian. They're restricted to the reading rooms (and some restricted to specific reading rooms). The majority of the bookstacks are staff only, as is the tunnel under Broad Street.
